Cartoon Caption Contest Official Rules

NO PURCHASE OR PAYMENT NECESSARY.

TO ENTER the Contest, fill in the information on the Humor Times Caption Contest page of the Humor Times website, including your proposed caption and your name, email address, city and state of residence. (When you enter, you will also be invited to receive the Humor Times weekly newsletter, but you can opt-out if you wish.) We will post winning caption entries on the Humor Times website. Your name and email address will only be used to notify you if you’ve won and to send you the newsletter (unless and until you opt-out), except that your name and state of residence will be used to identify you as the source of the caption when it’s posted on our website. Each Contestant must comply with the “Eligibility” rules below.

Winners are announced on the Humor Times website. The Humor Times is not responsible for late, lost, garbled, misdirected, misrouted incomplete, or incorrect entries. The Humor Times reserves the right to disqualify any person; and to cancel, modify or terminate any contest that is not capable of completion for any reason, including without limitation, technical failures and events beyond the Humor Times’s control; and to terminate the contest program in its entirety at any time.

JUDGING: Each caption will be judged on the following point scale: (a) Humor (1-50 points); (b) Originality/Creativity (1-50 points); totaling a maximum of 100 points. Entries that are not appropriate to the subject matter, in the sole opinion of the Humor Times editorial staff members, will be disqualified. The three Contestants whose captions earn the highest overall score in the opinion of the judges will win. In the event of a tie, the winner will be selected based on the Humor criterion. The caption must be original and written by the submitting Contestant(s), and must not have been entered in any other competition or violate the rights of other parties. Captions may not be offensive, obscene, defamatory; or violate third party rights. Winner selection for each contest will be conducted by the Humor Times editorial staff members, whose decision is final and binding.

WHAT THE WINNER WINS: The winning captions and the accompanying cartoon will be posted at the the Humor Times website, along with the name and state of residence of the winner. The winner will be entitled to choose between a PDF subscription to the Humor Times or any other prizes being offered. Prize(s) are not transferable. Taxes (if any) are the sole responsibility of each winner. The Humor Times reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value due to prize unavailability. The Humor Times shall have all rights to copy, edit, broadcast, publish and use, in whole or in part, any caption or other copyrightable materials, in any manner without further compensation to any Contestant (except where prohibited by law).

Prize winner(s) will be notified by email and, if the prize requires delivery (free subscriptions exempted), they will be required to reply within five (5) days of the date notice is sent, or the prize will be forfeited. If the prize, prize notification or attempted notification is returned undeliverable, the prize will be forfeited and may be awarded to an alternate winner in the discretion of the Humor Times. Unclaimed prizes may not be awarded. Winners must wait six months from the month in which their winning entry was submitted before they are eligible to win again, but they may enter if they wish. The Humor Times anticipates approximately 100 eligible contestants per Contest.

ELIGIBILITY: The Contest is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, 18 years of age or older as of the date of submission of a caption. The Contest is open to amateurs only; professional cartoonists and caption-writers are not eligible. All employees of the Humor Times and the immediate families and household members of each, are not eligible to win. By submitting an entry, Contestant agrees to be bound by these Official Rules. Entry constitutes permission to use winners’ names for editorial advertising and publicity purposes without further compensation (except where prohibited by law). The Humor Times and their promotional and advertising agencies shall have no liability and shall be released and held harmless by Contestant(s) for any damage, loss or liability to person or property, due in whole or part, directly or indirectly, by reason of the acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize or participation. Offer void where prohibited and subject to federal, state and local laws.
