Lawmaker Seeks Greater Diversity on Alabama’s Death Row

The state senator says certain demographics are underrepresented among the state’s death row inmates.

Alabama State Sen. Crispin Flake (R-Impetigo Springs) announced in a press conference yesterday that he intends to pursue legislation aimed at “ethnic and gender justice” on Alabama’s death row.

“What we have today is positively unacceptable in our enlightened age,” Flake said. “We have 78 black men on death row in Alabama, versus 70 whites and two ‘other.’ We have four white women and one black woman. We absolutely have to execute quite a few more white men, a slew of men of other ethnicities, and a whole herd of women if we’re going to erase this embarrassment.”

Flake said he was not concerned at present about the ethnicities of the women.

“We live in a time of great sensitivity about gender matters, and I totally get that,” Flake said. “Let’s bring the women into a condition equal to the men before we try to fine-tune it by what color they are.”

Flake recommended that law enforcement agencies and prosecutors look for new opportunities.

Alabama has a tendency to live in the past, much to the detriment of our reputation,” Flake said. “Our state is much, much more racially diverse than it was even a few years ago, and of course women are more than half the population, so I’d suggest a little more open-mindedness and initiative and imagination among our law officers and legal folks.”

The primary method of execution in Alabama is lethal injection, but nitrogen hypoxia is available as an option, and inmates convicted before 2002 may choose the electric chair, known as Yellow Mama.

Flake said he would like to see the state remove restrictions on the use of electrocution.

“We’re in the 21st century, and I’d like for us to have a state we can be proud of,” Flake said. “Let’s open things up a little bit and see if we can bring the fresh air of freedom to the death chamber.”
