Comedy & Political Correctness: A Friggin’ Showstopper!

political correctness

Quotes from Mel Brooks, George Carlin, Bill Burr, John Cleese, Jerry Seinfeld, Gilbert Gottfried & me – on political correctness and 86ing our babies!

political correctness

Take Mel Brooks’ 1967 Movie & Hit Play “The Producers” with the goose-stepping show-stopper musical number, “Springtime For Hitler” – Please!

I’m a big fan of ‘It’s great to be King’ Brooks, but thinking back to that time was embarrassing & cringe worthy.

had morals once.  Yes, early on I vowed to myself to never write or tell a joke about Hitler…but then I thought,

“If only Eva Brawn could’ve seen what Mel did with her 1st Draft”!

As strange as it may seem – even Hitler told a joke:

“I don’t know about you – but I’ll take boobs & brains over Brawn”!

Too soon?

Talk about politically incorrect!  But you know how easy it is when you’ve had a few beers in you!

Like I said, I would never tell those jokes on stage, but now alone on the computer, it’s safer – plus no tomato stains!  haha

I’m sharing them here to show how easy it is for a Comic on stage to want to get a laugh so badly – you’re willing to be shunned or jeopardize your career.

The trouble is, if enough people become too worried about Political Correctness – our acts would start to look like Swiss Cheese!

Writing Jokes isn’t Rocket Science, but most of us aren’t mean spirited enough to fight over what’s funny to you.

To tell the truth – sometimes Comics just want a laugh – not an opinion!

But after the initial self-flogging, there’s plenty more where they come from – so we just adjust our Jokestrap!

I don’t envy today’s Stand-Up Comics – if you say the ‘T’ word – half the audience in Red Hats walk out!

Those that toil on Comedy Club stages night after night are like Roman Gladiators performing in the ring – dodging the Snowflakes!

Years ago,  Jerry Seinfeld said he believes political correctness has put comedy on a self-destructive path & that may Comics don’t play College campuses anymore because students are too quick to use the word ‘Racist’, ‘Sexist’ & ‘Prejudice’.

Mel Brooks said, ‘Comedy has to walk a thin line, take risks”!

The late Gilbert Gottfried once said, “I think Stand-Up Comedy these days should come with instructions for people, that’s all.  If you think it’s funny laugh.  If you don’t, don’t laugh”!

Monty Python’s John Cleese: “The idea that you have to be protected from any kind of uncomfortable emotion is what I absolutely do not subscribe to”!

Comic, Bill Burr had no qualms: “Pitbulls are like a Gun you can pet”!  See – now all dog owners will boo! haha

political correctness

Revered Comic, George Carlin’s social commentary on taboo matters like religion & politics was shocking at the time too!

“Fighting for Peace is like screwing for Virginity”!

He also said, “I think it’s the duty of a comedian to find out where the line is drawn & cross it deliberately”!

And, who can forget his famous ‘7 Dirty Words’!  I won’t list them here, as I’m in enough trouble with my nude self-portrait in my Memoir, “Owning the Stage, Renting the Balls” – My Life as a Funny Girl! Find it!  haha  It’s on amazon.com.

Go figure!  “The Producers” won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay & Movie Critic, Roger Ebert said, “This is one of the funniest movies ever made”!

BTW – with our Late Nite Comics shredding their ‘Swollen Ankles’ & ‘Last-Meal Epstein Jokes’ – all bets are off!
